When a system is taken from state i to state f along the path iaf, it is found that `Q=50 cal and W=20 cal`. Along the path ibf `Q=36cal`. W along the path ibf is

A

66 cal

B

16 cal

C

14 cal

D

6 cal

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

The change in the internal energy does not depend upon the path. The system is taken from `i` to f along iaf as well as along ibf.
From the first law of thermodynamics, dQ = dU + dW
`thereforedU=dQ_(1)-dW_(1)=dQ_(2)-dW_(2)`
`therefore50-20=36-dW_(2)`
`thereforedW_(2)=36-50+20=6cal`
