Only secondary aliphatic as well as aromatic amines undergo Liebermann s nitroso reaction with nitrous acid When warmed with a crystal of phenol and a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid nitrosamines form a green solution which turns blue when made alkaline with aqueous solution hydroxide .
