A constant force of 5 N can produce an acceleration of 1 `m//s^(2)` on the body of mass `m_(1)` and 2`m//s^(2)` on the body of mass `m_(2)` . If both the masses are tied together and same force is applied then what will be the acceleration of the system ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Using `F = ma,` we have
` 5 N = m_(1) xx 1 m//s^(2) rArr m_(1) = 5 kg `
and ` 5 N = m_(2) xx 2 m//s^(2) rArr m_(2) 2*5 kg`
Now, acceleration of combined mass,
` a= F/(m_(1) +m_(2))`
` = (5N)/((5 +2*5)kg)`
` = 0*67 m//s^(2)`
