A fraunhofer diffraction pattern is being formed by light wave of frequency `5xx 10^(14)` Hz through a slit of width `10^(-2)` m . Find the angular width of central maximum [Velocity of light in vacuum = `3xx10^(8)` m. `s^(-1)` ]

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The angular width on either side of the central maximum
`theta = (lambda)/(a) = ( c)/(nu a ) [ because lambda = ( c)/(nu)]`
` = (3 xx 10^(8))/(5 xx 10^(14) xx 10^(-2)) ["here", nu = 5 xx 10^(14) Hz`,
a = `10^(-2)m, c = 3 xx 10^(8) m.s^(-1)`]
` = 0.6 xx 10^(-4)` rad
`therefore` Angular width of central maximum = `2theta = 1.2 xx 10^(-4) `rad
