The kinetic energy, potential energy and total energy of a revolving electron in an atom or ion are `E_k, E_p and E` respectively .
`E_k+E_p=E,E_k=-E,E_p=2E`
`because E_k` is always positive ,
`therefore E_p and E` are always negative.
E gets decreased as an electron makes a transition from an excited state to the ground state of a hydrogen -like atom/ ion.
Hence ,`E_p` also decreases, but `E_k` increases.
