How will you separate the constituents of a sample of gun powder?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Gun powder is a mixture of charcoal (carbon), sulphur and nitre `(KNO_(3))`. The constituents are separated on the basis of their solubility in different solvents. Nitre `(KNO_(3))` is soluble in water. Sulphur is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulphide `(CS_(2))`. charcoal is insoluble in both water and `CS_(2)`.
