A gaseous hydrocarbon contains 75% C by weight. 1L of this gas at STP weighs 0.72 g. what is the molecular formula of the hydrocarbon? [weight of 1 L of hydrogen at STP=0.09g].

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`D=(0.72)/(0.09)`=8, Molecular weight `(M)=2xx8=16`
`C:H=(75)/(12):(25)/(1)=6.25:25=1:4`
Empirical formula: `CH_(4)`,, molecular formula`, (CH_(4))_(n)`
Molecular weight=(12+4`xx`1)n
As, 16n=16 `thereforen=1`, So, the actual formula is `CH_(4)`.
