In Rutherford' experiment, generaly the thin foil of heavy atoms, like gold, paltinum etc. have been used to e bombarded by the `alpha`-particles. If the thin foil of light atoms like aluminium etc. is used, what difference would be observed from the above results?

The nucleus of heavy atoms contains large amount of positive charge. Thus, the `alpha`-particles that moved towards the nucleus are deflecrted back due to strong repulsion by the nucleus. Those particles which possed through the region closer to the nucleus are deflected in different directions. on the other hand, the nucleus of light atoms contains small amount of positive charge. hence, negligible number of `alpha`-particles are deflected back or are deflected by small angles.

H, He^(+), Li^(2+) are examples of atoms or ions with one electron each . The energy of such atoms when in the n-th energy state (according to Bohr,s theory , n=1,2,3…. =principal quantum number ) is E_n =(-13.6 Z^2)/(n^2) eV (1 eV =1.6xx10^(-19)J) .
