An ion with mass number 37 possesses one unit off negative charge. If the ion contains 11.1% more neutrons than electrons, find the symbol of the ion.

Verified by Experts

As the ion contains one unit of negative charge, the ion has one electron more than that of the number of protons. Total number of electrons and neutron=37+1=38. let the number of electrons in the ion=x.
Hence, numbe of neutrons`x+(11.1)/(100)xx x=1.111x`
Again, `x+1.111x=38 or,x=18`
Thus, number of electrons present in the ion=18
Thus, number of protons present in the ion=18-1=17
so, the atomic number of the element is 17 ie.., the atom is chlorine. its symbol is `""_(17)^(37)Cl^(-)`.
