An ion with mass number 56 contains 3 units of positive charge and 30.4% more neutrons than electrons. Assign the symbol to this ion.

Verified by Experts

The ion contains three units of positive charge. Thus, the number of electrons in the ion is three less than that of the number of protons. Number of protons+number of neutrons=mass number=56. let, number of electrons in the ion be x.
Number of neutrons present in the ion`x+(30.4)/(100)xx x=1.304x`
Again, total numbe of electrons and neutrons=53.
or, x+1.304x=53 or, 2.304x=53 or, x=23
thus, number of electrons present in the ion=23 and the number of protons=23+3=26. the element with atomic number 26 is Fe and the symbol will be `""_(26)^(56)Fe^(3+)`.
