The value of compressibility factor (Z) ...

The value of compressibility factor (Z) for a gas at STP is less than 1. what is the molar volume of this gas at STP?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We know, `Z=(V)/(V)` [V=molar volume of a real gas at a certain temperature and pressure. `V_(i)`=Molar volume of an ideal gas at the same temperature and presure.]
According to the question, `Z lt 1`
`therefore (V)/(V_(i)) lt 1` or `V lt V_(i)` or, `V lt 22.4L`
[`because` the molar volume of an ideal gas at STP=22.4 litre]
The volume of the real gas at STP will be less than 22.4 litre.
