Why is the quantity of air required to inflate the tyre of a car in summer less than that required in winter?

Text Solution

According to the kinetic theory of gases the pressure of a gas originates due to the bombardment of the gas molecules on the walls of the container. At higher temperature, the molecules in a gas have higher velocities or average kinetic energy, and they collide with the walls of their container more frequently and with greater force. as a result, the pressure of a gas increases with increase in temperature if the volume of the gas remains fixed. the summer temperature being more than the winter temperature, the average kinetic energy of the air molecules in summer is comparatively more than that in the winter. as a result, the air molecules in the summer will exert greater amount of force on the walls than that exerted by the same number of molecules in the winter. therefore, if the volume remains fixed, the pressure of a certain amount of air in summer will be more than that in winter.
