What is meant by the term, chromatography?

'Chromatography' originates from Greek words, 'chroma' meaning 'colour' and 'grahein' (or graphy) meaning 'to write.' The term chromatography was used at first as a set of laboratory techniques for the separation of coloured substances. Today, it is widely used for the separation, purification, identification and characterisation of the components of a mixture, be it coloured or colourless.
