How is cast iron different from pig iron?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The iron obtained from blast furnace is called pig iron. It contains `4%` carbon and impurities like `S, P, Si, Mn` etc.
Cast iron is obtained by melting pig iron with scrap iron and coke using hot air blast. It has a slightly lower carbon content (about `3%`) and is extremely hard and brittle.
