What is R.M.S speed?...

What is R.M.S speed?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It is defined as the square root of the mean of the squares of the velocities of all the molecules present in the gas.
Let there be `n_1` molecules with `V_1` spped. `n_2` molecule with `V_2` speed `n_3` molecules with `V_3` speed and so on
R.M.S Speed
`sqrt((n_1V_1^2+n_2V_2^2+n_3V_3^2+....)/(n_1+n_2+n_3+.....))`
