What is meant by resolution of a vector ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The process of splitting up of a vector into rectangular components is called resolution.
In the figure `vec(OP)=vecr=hat(xi)+yhatj`
where `vecr` is called as position vector. Horizontal component of
`vecr` is `vecr_x=(r sin theta)hati=hat(xi)` vertical component of `vecr` is
`vecr_y=(r sintheta)hatj=yhatj` where `x=r costheta`, and `y=r sintheta` are magnitude of `vecr_x` and `vecr_y` respectively.
