Explain the law of conservation of linear momentum with examples.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

e.g., `(i)` : when a person jumps out of stationary boat, he/she pushes the floor backwards and thus provides a backward momentum so that total momentu m is conserved.
`0=m_(p)v_(p)+m_(b)v_(b)`
i.e. `v_(b)=-(m_(p)v_(p))/(m_(b))`
The negative sign indicates the direction of momentum is opposite to the momentum of the person.
e.g. `(ii)` : Momentum of the exhaust gases gives equal and opposite momentum to the rocket.
