Let `m_1`, `m_2` be the masses of products and `v_1`, `v_2` be their respective velocities. Therefore, total linear momentum after disintegration = ` m_(1)v_(1) + m_(2)v_(2)` . Before disintegration , the nucleus is at rest. Therefore, its linear momentum before disintegration is zero . According to the people of conservation of linear momentum,
`m_1``vec (v_1)` + `m_2``vec v_2` = 0 or `vec v_2` = `- m_1``vec v_1` / `m_2`
Negative sign shows that `v_1` and `v_2` are in opposite directions.

A nucleus is at rest in the laboratory frame of reference Show that if it distintegrates into two smaller nuclei the products must be emitted in opposite directions .

Assertion: Stationary waves are so called because particles are at rest in stationary waves. Reason: They are formed by the superposition of two identical waves travelling in opposite directions.

The radioactive nuclei are unstable and emit alpha (._(2)He^(4)) , beta (._(-1)e^(0)) and gamma (._(0)gamma^(0)) radiations to acheive states of greater stability. Rutherford and Soddy suggested the following rules governing the radioactive decay, (i) The algebric sum of charges (atomic numbers) before and after disintegration must be the same. (ii) The sum of mass numbers before and after disintegration must also be the same. The particle emitted in the reaction ._(90)Th^(234) to ._(91)Pa^(234)+........ is

A nucleus A, With a finite de-broglie wavelength lambda_(A) , undergoes spontaneous fission into two nuclei B and C of equal mass. B flies in the same direction as that of A, While C flies in the opposite direction with a velocity equal to half of that of B . The de-Broglie wavelength lambda_(B) and lambda_(B) and C are respectively:

A diatomic molecule two identicla atoms of mass m bound together a distance l apart is confined in a lab reference frame. At a certain time one of the two atoms is observed to have speed v_(0) and the other, moving in the opposite direction, speed v_(0)//3 .

A particular type of nucleus whose decay constant is lambda is produced at a steady rate of p nuclei per second. Show that the number of nuclei N present t second after the production starts is N=(P)/(lambda)[1-e^(~lambdat)] .
