Discuss the change in the degree of randomness for the following cases- (1) Combustion of kerosene, (2) Sublimation of dry ice.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(1) Combustion of kerosene: Kerosene is a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons. The combustion of kerosene produces `CO_(2)` and water vapour. As in the reaction, a liquid converts in a gaseous mixture, the molecular randomness of the system increases.
(2) Sublimation of dry ice: In dry ice, (solid carbon dioxide), the molecules of `CO_(2)` exist in orderly state. when this solid sublimes, the gaseous molecules formed move randomly, i.e., the degree of randomness of the molecules increases.
