At `25^(@)C` and 1 atm pressure, for the reaction `3O_(2)(g)to2O_(3)(g)," "DeltaH=286kJ and DeltaS=-137.2J*K^(-1)`. Is this reaction spontaneous? Does the spontaneity of thir reaction depend on temperature? Is the reverse reaction spontaneous ? If so, then why? does the spontaneity of the reverse reaction depend on temperature?

Text Solution

(1) No. (2) for the given reaction `DeltaH gt 0 and DeltaS lt0`. So, according to the equation `DeltaG=DeltaH-TDeltaS,DltaG` will be positive at any temperature. Hence, the spontaneity of this reaction is independent of temperature. (3) the reverse reaction is spontaneous. (4) In the reverse reaction `[2O_(3)(g)to3O_(2)(g)],DeltaH=-286kJ and DeltaS=+137.2J*K^(-1)`. so, according to the equation `DeltaG=DeltaH-TDeltaS,DeltaG` is negative,
(5) The spontaneity of the reverse reaction is also independent of temperature as `DeltaG` is negative [`because DeltaH lt0 and DeltaS gt0`] at any temperature.
