I(2)(g)hArr 2I(g), Discuss the effect of...

`I_(2)(g)hArr 2I(g)`, Discuss the effect of the following changes on equilibrium of the mentioned endothermic reaction: (i) temperature is increased. (ii) pressure is increased at constant temperature.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) The reaction is endothermic. So, according to Le chatelier's principle, increse in temperature at equilibrium will shift the equelibrium towards right, and as a result, the yield of I(g) will increase.
(ii) The forward reaction is associated with increase in volume, as 2 mol of I(g) is formed from 1 mol of `I_(2)(g)`. so, according to Le chatelier's principle, increase in pressure at constant temperature will cause the equilibrium to shift towards left. consequently, the yield of I(g) will decrease.
