What will be the effect of addition of an inert gas in the following equilibrium at constant temperature and volume? `PC l_(5)(g) hArr PCl_(3)(g) +Cl_(2)(g)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

At constant temperature and volume, adding inert gas to the reaction systemm does not effect the position of equilibrium. This is because partial pressures of `PCl_(5),PCl_(3) and Cl_(2)` remain the same although the addition of inerrt gas inert gas increase the total pressure in the reaction system. as a result, the equilibrium remains undisturbed.
