Dihydrogen gas is obtained from natural ...

Dihydrogen gas is obtained from natural gas by partial oxidation with steam as per following
`CH_(4)(g)+H_(2)O(g)hArr CO(g)+3H_(2)(g)`
How will the values of `K_(p)` and composition of equilibrium mixture be affected by
(i) Increasing the pressure (ii) Incresing the temperature (iii) using a catalyst ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) `K_(p)` remains unchanged on increasing the pressure. According to Le Chatelier's principle, equilibrium will shift in the backward direction because `n_(r) lt n_(p)`.
(ii) As the reaction is endothermic, the value of `K_(p)` increases on raing the temperature. the increase in temperature favours the forward reaction, thereby increasing the concentrations of products.
(iii) Catalyst has no effect either on the value of `K_(p)` or on the equilibrium composition. however, equilibrium will be attained more quickly.
