How many litres of water mutt be added to 1 litre of of an aqueous solution of HCl with a pH of 1 to create an aqueous solution with pH of 2

A

9.0L

B

0.9L

C

0.1L

D

2.0L

Text Solution

`[H_3O^+]` in HCl solution of pH=1 is 0.1(M)
If VL of water is added to 1L of this HCl solution, then total volume of the resulting solution (V+1) L.
In the resulting solution `[H_3O^+]=(0.1)/(V+1)mol*L^)-1)`
`:.pH=-log_(10)[H_3O^+]=-log[(0.1)/(V+1)]`
However, pH for the resulting solution is 2.
`:.2=-log((0.1)/(V+1))" or "(0.1)/(V+1)=10^(-2):.V=9`
