In the Lassaigne's NH(2)O * HCI reponds ...

In the Lassaigne's `NH_(2)O * HCI` reponds to the test for the element chlorine but not for the element nitrogen. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As there is no carbon ( C ) atom in `NH_(2)OH*HCI,NaCN` is not produced in the first step by the reaction between sodium (Na) and C. Hence, formation of sodium ferrocyanide and ferric ferrocyanide (prussain blue) in the subsequent step does not take place. Therefore `NH_(2)OH*HCI` does not respond to the Lassaigne's test for nitrogen. But chlorine (CI) present in `NH_(2)OH*HCI` combines with Na metal to form soluble NaCI which reacts with `AgNo_(3)` in the subsequent step to produce white precipitate of AgCI which is soluble in ammonium hydroxide.
`Na+CIrarrNaCI , NaCI+AgNO_(3)rarrAgCIdarr("white")+NaNO_(3)`
`AgCI+2NH_(4)OHrarr[Ag(NH_(3))_(3))_(2)]CI("water soluble")+2H_(2)O`
