Write the principal of estimation of carbon and hydrogen in an organic compound.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A known amount of dry and pure organic compound is heated with cupric oxide (CuO) in a hard glass test tube. As a result the carbon ( C ) and hydrogen (H) present in the compound are oxidised to carbon dioxide `(CO_(2))` and water `(H_(2)O)` respectively.
`{:(C+2Cu0overset(Delta)to(CO_(2)uarr+2Cu)),(2H+Cu0overset(Delta)toH_(2)0uarr+Cu):}`
Knowing the amounts of `CO_(2) and H_(2)O` formed in the reaction it is possible to calculate the percentage of C and H present in the compound.
