Calculate the potential of hydrogen elec...

Calculate the potential of hydrogen electrode in contact with a solution whose pH is 10.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The reduction reaction in a hydrogen electrode is `H^(+)+e rarr (1)/(2)H_(2)`
UsingNernst equation, we have
`E_(H^(+)|(1)/(2)H_(2))=E_(H^(+)|(1)/(2)H_(2))-(0.059)/(1)log.(1)/([H^(+)])`
`=0-(0.059)/(1)log.(1)/(10^(-10))" "[because pH=10, H^(+)'=10^(-10)M]`
`=-0.0591xx10=-0.591V`
