Will Cu dissolve as `Cu^(2+)` in 1 (M) HCl solution? Will it do so in 1 (M) `HNO_(3)` solution?
`["Given : "E_(Cu^(2+)|Cu)^(@)=+0.34 and E_(NO_(3)^(-)|NO)^(@)=+0.96]`

(1) In 1 (M) HCl, either `H^(+)` or `Cl^(-)` should be reduced. Since `Cl^(-)` is the reduced form of chlorine, it cannot be reduced and further. So, `Cl^(-)` cannot oxidise `Cu`. As the standard reduction potential of hydrogen is cannot smaller than that of copper `(+0.34V), H^(+)` cannot oxidise `Cu` to `Cu^(2+)` . Thus, Cu will not dissolve in 1(M) HCl.
(2) The standard reduction potential of `NO_(3)^(-)|NO` redox system is larger than that of `Cu^(2+)|Cu` system. So, `NO_(3)^(-)` can oxidise `Cu` to `Cu^(2+)`. Therefore, copper will dissolve as `Cu^(2+)` in 1 (M) `HNO_(3)`.
