Why is alternating current used instead ...

Why is alternating current used instead of direct current for the measurements of conductivity of solutions?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

All conductance measurements are done by alternating current (AC) and not by direct current (DC). If DC is used, electrolysis will occur and concentration of the solution will change with time. A a result, the observed conductance will be erroneous. Apart from this, if gaseous substances are formed during electrolysis, then polarisation takes place at the electrodes, producing erroneous results.
