Which is a stronger reducing agent Cr^(2...

Which is a stronger reducing agent `Cr^(2+)` or `Fe^(2+)` ? Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`E_(Cr^(3+)|Cr^(2+))^(0)` and `E_(Fe^(3+)|Fe^(2+))^(0)` is `-0.41 V` and `+0.77 V` respectivley. This shows that `Cr^(2+)` can be easily converted to `Cr^(3+)`. Therefore `Cr^(2+)` is stronger reducing agent than `Fe^(2+)`.
