Arrange each set of compounds in order of increasing boiling points.
(1) Bromomethane, Bromoform, Chloromethane, Dibromomethane.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

For alkyl halides containing the same alkyl group, boiling point increases with increasing molecular mass of the halogen. So, boiling point of bromomethane is greater than chloromethane. But, for bromo derivatives of methane, boiling point increases as the number of Bratoms in the molecule increase. Thus, boiling point increases in the sequence: Chloromethane `(CH_3Cl)` < Bromomethane `(CH_(3)Br)` < Dibromomethane `(CH_(2)Br_(2)` < Bromoform `(CHBr_(3))`.
