Give reasons in one or two sentances for the following: 'Hydrazones of aldehydes and ketones are not prepared in highly acidic medium'.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hydazones are formed by reacting carbonyl compounds with hydrazin`(overset(* *)(N)H_(2)-overset(* *)(N)H_(2))` which acts as a nucleophile. In the strongly acidic medium, hydrazine gets protonated and therefore, It in not a position to act as nuclephile. As a result, aldehydes and ketones are not prepared in strongly acidic medium.
