Assertion (A) . Sulphur present in an organic compound can be estimated quantitaively be Carius method.
Reason (R). Sulpur is separated easily from other atoms in the molecule and gets precipitated as light yellow solid.

A

Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A

B

Both A and R are correct but R is not the correct explanation of As

C

both A and R are not correct

D

A is not correct but R is correct

The correct Answer is:
C

Both A and R are correct but R is not the correct explanation of A.
S present in an organic compound can be estimated quantitatively by Carius method. In this method, a known weight of organic compound is heated with fuming `HNO_(3)`, S present in it gets converted into `H_(2)SO_(4)`. On adding `BaCl_(2), H_(2)SO_(4)` gets precipitated as `BaSO_(4)` which may be of light yellow or white in colour.
If light yellow colour is obtained, it means some impurities are present. It is then filtered, washed, purified and then dired and finally pure `BaSO_(4)` of white colour is obtained.

In Carius' method , sulphur present in an organic compound is estimated as

Assertion (A) : The unpolarised light and polarized light can be distinguished from each other by using Polaroid. Reason (R ) : A Polaroid is capable of producing plane polarized beams of light.

Three students, Manish, Ramesh and Rajini were determining the extra elements present in an organic compound given by their teacher. They prepared the Lassaigne's extract (L.E.) independently by the fusion of the compound with sodium metal. Then they added solide FeSO_(4) and dilute sulphuric acid to a part of Lassaigne's extract. Manish and Rajni obtained prussian blue colour but Ramesh got red colour. Ramesh repeated the test with the same Lassaigne's extract, but again got red colour only. They were surprised and went to their teacher and told him about their observation. Teacher asked them to think over the reason for this. Can you help them by giving the reason for this observation. Also, write the chemical equations to explain the formation of compounds of different colour.

Which of the following statement is false. (1) Kjeldhal's method is used for estimation of N-element in organic compounds. (2) Carius method is used for Estimation of N-element. (3) Carius method is used for estimation of sulphur in organic compounds. (4)Phosphorous is present in organic compound is oxidized to H_3PO_4 then precipitated by magnesia mixture in form of Mg_2P_2_O_7 .

In the Carius method of estimation of sulphur, 0.36 g of an organic compound gave 0.2330 g BaSO_(4) . What is the percentage of sulphur in the organic compound? Strategy: Using the atomic masses, find the molar mass of BaSO_(4) . Calculate the moles of BaSO_(4) which is also equal to the moles of S . Using molar mass of S , find the mass of S to calculate the % of S in the organic compound.
