The `pH` of a dilute solution of acetic acid wea found to be `4.3`. The addition of a small crystal of sodium acetate will cause `pH` to

A

become less than 4.3

B

become more than 4.3

C

remain equal to 4.3

D

unpredictable

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

`CH_(3)COONa` being strong electrolte ionises into `CH_(3)COO^(-)` and `Na^(+)` ions and it supresses the ionisation of `CH_(3)COOH`
`(CH_(3)COO^(-) hArr CH_(3)COO^(-)+H^(+))`
thereby decreasing the `H^(+)` ion concentration . This would cause pH to increase beyond 4.3
