What will happen when chloride is passed through an aqueous solution of potassium bromide ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The solution will acquire an orange colour due to the vapours of bromine that are evoleved .Actually chlorine stronger oxidising agent than bromine and oxidises `Br^(-)` ions (in KBr) to `Br^(2)` and itself is reduced lto `CI^(-)` ions
`2KBr+CI_(2)rarr2KCI+Br_(2)`
