In `H_(2)S` , the oxidation state of sulphur is -2.It can only increase its oxidation state b ut cannot decrease it .Theerfore, it can act only as reducing agent.In `SO_(2)` the oxidation state of suplhur is +4 .It is in a position toi undergo a decrease as well as an increase in the oxidation state. Thus `SO_(2)` can act both as an oxidising agent and a reducing agent
