Solutions of two electrolytes 'A' and 'B...

Solutions of two electrolytes 'A' and 'B' are diluted. It is found that `Lambda_(m)` value of 'B' increases 2 times while that of 'A' increases20 times. Which of the two is a strong electrolyte ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The electrolyte 'B' is strong as compared to electrolyte 'B'. In case of strong electrolyte, ionisation is already almost complete (`alpha` is nealy 1). The dilution process reduce only inter-ionic attration and as a result ionic mobility increases and therefore, increase in `Lambda_(m)` is not quite large. However, in case of weak electrolyte, ionisation also increases upon dilution. Therefore, increase in `Lambda_(m)` is not quite large. This means that 'A' is a weak electrolyte.
