A metal cube of side 0.10 m, density `8500 kgm^(-3)` is suspended by a thread and completely immersed in a liquid of density `2000 kgm^(-3)`. Find the tension in the sting `(g=9.8 ms^(-2))`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given, a=0.10m
volume `V=a^(3)=0.1^(3)=10^(3)m^(3)`
density `rh=8500 kgm^(-3)=8.5 xx 10^(3) kgm^(-3)`
`W=Vrhog=8.5 xx 10^(3) xx 10^(-3) xx 9.8 =83.3`
Tension in the string=apparent weight of the solid in water
i.e, T=W-B where B is the buoyancy.
`T=W-Vrho_(w)g=83.3 -10^(-3) xx 10^(3) xx 9.8`
T=37.5N
