A vessel fitted with a weightless, frictionless piston of `0.025m^(2)` area contians conc. HCl. The piston moved 1m outwards when 0.075kg of iron fillings were added at 300K. The solution left behind was found to contain Fe(II). The approximate purity of the iron sample is:

A

0.5

B

0.75

C

0.9

D

0.4

The correct Answer is:
B

Volume of `H_(2)` gas produced `= 0.025 xx 1 = 0.025 m^(3) = 25 L`
PV = nRT
`1xx 25 = n xx 0.082 xx 300`
`n_(H_(2)) = 1.016`
The reactions involued is :
`Fe + 2HCl to FeCl_(2) + H_(2)uarr`
Thus, number of moles of iron will be 1.016.
i.e., Mass of iron is `1.0 16xx 56` i.e, 56.869 g
% purity of iron sample `= (56.896)/(75) xx 100 ~~ 75%]`

A vertical cylinder of cross-sectional area 0.1m^(2) closed at both ends is fitted with a frictionless piston of mass M dividing the cylinder into two parts. Each part contains one mole of an ideal gas in equilibrium at 300K . The volume of the upper part is 0.1m^(3) and that of lower part is 0.05m^(3) .What force must be applied to the piston so that the volumes of the two parts remain unchanged when the temperature is increased to 500K ?

A diatomic gas is enclosed in a vessel fitted with massless movable piston. Area of cross section of vessel is 1m^2 . Initial height of the piston is 1m (see the figure). The initial temperature of the gas is 300K. The temperature of the gas is increased to 400K, keeping pressure constant, calculate the new height of the piston. The piston is brought to its initial position with no heat exchange. Calculate the final temperature of the gas. You can leave answer in fraction.

Air is contained in a vertical piston – cylinder assembly fitted with an electric heater. The piston has a mass of 50 kg and cross sectional area of 0.1 m^(2) . Mass of the air inside the cylinder is 0.3 kg. The heater is switched on and the volume of the air slowly increases by 0.045 m^(3) . It was found that the internal energy of the air increased by 32.2 kJ//kg and that of the piston increased by 0.06 kJ/kg. Assume that the container walls and outer surface of the piston are well insulated and there is no friction. The atmospheric pressure is 100 kPa. Determine the heat transferred by the heater to the system consisting of air and the piston.

A vessel of uniform cross-section of length 500 cm as shown in figure is divided in two parts by a weightless and frictionless piston one part contains 5 moles of He(g) and other part 2 moles of H_(2)(g) and 4 moles of O_(2)(g) added at the same temperature and pressure in which reaction takes place finally vessel cooled to 300 K and 1 atm. What is the length of He compartment? (Assume volume of piston and vol. of H_(2)O(l) formed are negligible)

Show a vertical cylindrical vesse seperated in two parts by a frictionless piston free to move along the length of vessel. The length of the cylilender is 90 cm and the piston divides the cylinder in the ratio of 5:4. Each of the two parts of the vessel contains 0.1 mole of an ideal gas. The temoerature of the gas is 300K in each part. Calculate the mass of the piston.(figure)

An ideal monatomic gas is confined in a cylinder by a spring-loaded piston of cross-section 8.0xx10^-3m^2 . Initially the gas is at 300K and occupies a volume of 2.4xx10^-3m^3 and the spring is in its relaxed (unstretched, unompressed) state, fig. The gas is heated by a small electric heater until the piston moves out slowly by 0.1m. Calculate the final temperature of the gas and the heat supplied (in joules) by the heater. The force constant of the spring is 8000 N//m , atmospheric pressure is 1.0xx10^5 Nm^-2 . The cylinder and the piston are thermally insulated. The piston is massless and there is no friction between the piston and the cylinder. Neglect heat loss through lead wires of the heater. The heat capacity of the heater coil is negligible. Assume the spring to be massless.
