Justify the following reactions are redox reactions :
`4NH_(3)(g)+5O_(2)(g)to4NO(g)+6H_(2)O(g)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`overset(-3+1)(4NH_(3))(g)+5overset(0)(O_(2))(g)tooverset(+2-2)(4NO)(g)+overset(+1-2)(6H_(2)O)(g)` in the reaction ,`NH_(3)` undergoes oxidation because the oxidation number of N-atom increases (-3 to +2) , while `O_(2)` undergoes reduction ,as is evident from the decrease in oxidation number of O `(0to2)`. So it is a redox reaction.
