The compound `AgF_(2)` is an unstable compound, However ,if formed the compound acts as a very strong oxidising agent .Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`AgF_(2)`: can be prepared althrough it is not a stable compound .This is because the oxidantion state of Ag in `AgF_(2)` is +2 ,which is not the stable oxidation state of Ag. The stable oxidation state Ag is +1. As a result ,`Ag^(2+)` in `AgF_(2)` quickly reduces to `Ag^(+)` by gaining an electron `(Ag^(2+)+etoAg^(+))`.This brings about the unstability of `AgF_(2)` and makes it a very strong oxidising agent.
