Why does the following reaction occurs?
`XeO_(6)^(4-)(aq)+2F^(-)(aq)+6H^(+)(aq)toXeO_(3)(g)+F_(2)(g)+3H_(2)O(l)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`overset(+8)(Xe)O_(6)^(4-)(aq)+overset(-1)(F^(-))(aq)+6H^(+)(aq)tooverset(+6)(Xe)O_(3)(g)+overset0F_(2)(g)+3H_(2)O(l)`
The oxidation number of Xe in `XeO_(6)(4-)and XeO_(3)` are +8 and +6 respectively .Thus in the reaction the oxidation reduction and it acts as an oxidising agent. On the other hands, tj oxidation number of F increases from -1 to 0. Therefore as a reductant. As the reaction is spontaneous and `XeO_(6)^(4-) `oxidises `F^(-)`,it can be concluded that `Na_(4)XeO_(6)` has stronger oxidising power than `F_(2)`
