The length of a right circular cylinder ...

The length of a right circular cylinder filled with water is 4 m and its diameter is 1 m. At first, it is held upright on its base, and then is positioned laterally. Find the ratio of the thrusts exerted on its circular base in the above two cases.

When the cylinder is held upright, the thrust exerted on its circular base,
`F_(1)="pressure"xx"area"=4xx1000xx9.8xxpi(1/2)^(2)N`
When the cylinder is kept laterally, the thrust exerted on its circular base,
`F_(2)` = average pressure `xx` area
`=1/2xx1000xx9.8xxpi(1/2)^(2)N`
`therefore" "F_(1)/F_(2)=(4xx1000xx9.8xxpi(1/2)^(2))/(1/2xx1000xx9.8xxpi(1/2)^(2))`
`therefore" "F_(1):F_(2)=8:1`.
