A piece of wood of volume `20.5cm^(3)` is tied to a piece of lead of volume `1cm^(3)`. State whether the combination will sink or float in water. [Specific gravity of wood and lead are respectively 0.5 and 11.4]

Weight of the piece of wood
`20.5xx0.5xxg=10.25gxxg`
Weight of lead = `1xx11.4xxg=11.4gxxg`
`therefore` Total weight of the combination
= `(10.25+11..4)xxg=21.65gxxg`
Total volume of wood and lead = (20.5 + 1) = `21.5cm^(3)`
`therefore` Weight of displaced water by wood and lead = `21.5gxxg`
`because` Weight of combination `gt` weight of displaced water
So, when the piece of wood and lead are tied together, the combination will sink in water.
