A glass ball of density `2.6g*cm^(-3)` is coated with a thick layer of wax of density `0.8g*cm^(-3)`. If the combination floats in water remaining completely submerged, find the ratio of the volume of wax to that of the glass ball.
Text Solution

Let volume of glass be `V_(1)cm^(3)` and volume of wax be `V_(2)cm^(3)`. According to the problem, weight of glass ball + weight of wax = weight of displaced water or, `V_(1)xx2.6xxg+V_(2)xx0.8xxg=(V_(1)+V_(2))xx1xxg` or, `V_(1)(2.6-1)=V_(2)(1-0.8)or,V_(2)/V_(1)=1.6/0.2=8/1` `therefore` Volume of wax: volume of glass = 8 : 1.
