Write chemical reaction each to illustrate the following :
(i) Hofmann's bromamide reaction
(ii) Gabriel phthalimide synthesis

Text Solution

(i) Hofmann's bromid reaciton : The conversion of a primary amide to a primary amine containig one carbon atom less than the original amide on heating with a mixture of `Br_(2)` in presence of NaOH is caleld Hofmann's bromide reaction
`CH_(3)underset("Acetamide")(CONH_(2))+Br_(2)+4NaOHrarrCH_(3)underset("Methylamine")(NH_(2)+2NaBr)+Na_(2)CO_(3)+2H_(2)O` (ii) Gabriel phthalimide reaction : Thus is a very convenient method for the preparation of pure aplication and aralkyl primary amines.
