A lamp is connected in series with a capacitor. Predict your observations for dc and ac connections. What happens in each case if capacitance of the capacitor is reduced?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

For DC connections, the capacitor connected across the lamp gets charged first. After the capacitor is fully charged, There is no current in the lamp . For AC connections. The current will flow through the circuit and the capacitve reactance in the circuit will be 1/`omega`C which increase if the capacitance of capacitor is reduced. Thus lamp will glow in case of AC supply and will not glow in case of DC supply. The brightness of the lamp can be controlled by changing the value of capacitance of the capacitor. If capacitance of the capacitor is decreased, the lamp will glow brighter.
