The work function for a certain metal is 4.2eV. Will this metal give photoelectric emission for incident radiation of wavelength 330 nm? Use, `h=6.6xx10^(-34)Js`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given , work function , W = 4.2 eV
Energy of the incident photon
`E=(hc)/lamda=(6.6xx10^(-34)xx3xx10^(8))/(330xx10^(-9))`
`=6xx10^(-19)J`
`=(6xx10^(-19))/(1.6xx10^(-19))eV`
=3.75 eV
Since energy of the incident photon is less than the work function of material , photoelectric emission will not take place.
