Can equilibrium be achieved between water and its vapours in an open vessel ? Explain yours answer and say what happens eventuallly.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Equilibrium cannot be achieved between water and water vapour in an open vessel. This is because water vapour diffuse into air and their concentration above water surface is negligible. As a result, the reverse process of condensation of vapour into liquid is almost negligible. Therefore, evaporation continues till the whole water changes into vapour form. Finally, the whole water will diffuse into air as water vapour.
