A wire 10 m long has a cross-sectional area `1.25 xx 10^(-4) m^(2)`. It is subjected to a load of 5 kg. If Young's modulus of the material is `4 xx 10^(10) N m^(-2)`, calculate the elongation produced in the wire. Take `g = 10 ms^(-2)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We know that `F/A = Y xx (Delta L)/L`
`DeltaL = (F/A)(L/Y) = (50/(1.25 xx 10^(-4))) (10/(4 xx 10^(10))) = 10^(-4)m`.
